Some well-known houses also offer a bespoke service (for a four-figure sum). While the fragrance house Creed is best known for its highly prized off-the-shelf scents, it has offered a bespoke service for 240 years.

It made Fleurissimo for Grace Kelly to wear at her wedding to Prince Rainer of Monaco (inspired by the flowers in her bouquet) and has also made scents for Errol Flynn and Cary Grant.

Today the service is continued by sixth generation perfumer Olivier Creed who, after an initial consultation, will make up a fragrance by hand with his team in Paris. Within three weeks they can create a draft which can then be fine-tuned.
